Palazzolo Acreide

Located in the upper part of this ancient and noble city is an archaeological area worth admiring: the remains of ancient Akrai, founded by the Syracusans in 664 BC, a small Greek theater where classic works are staged, and other important remains of places of worship, tombs, quarries, and an ancient decumanus. Rich in monuments that testify to Sicilian Baroque, you should not miss Palazzo Pizzo, the churches of the Immaculate and Santa Maria di Gesú, which contains a famous Renaissance masterpiece by Francesco Laurana (Virgin and Child from 1471), the Church of San Michele, and a little further on, the Antonino Uccello House Museum in the 18th century Palazzo Ferla-Bonelli. In the lower part of the city, we find small wonders like the Mother Church of San Nicola and the Basilica of San Paolo with its characteristic three-story tower facade with a porch. Continuing in the Sicilian Baroque style, we can admire the splendid facade of the church of the Annunciata. Being in Sicily, we cannot forget the gastronomic richness that characterizes Palazzolo, such as Ragusano, a DOP spun paste cheese, but also crispelle, a typical Christmas sweet, with honey and cinnamon.
