Portopalo di Capo Passero

The town of Portopalo di Capo Passero, the southernmost municipality on the Sicilian island (it is located below the parallel of Tunis), is definitely worth a visit. Its territory includes the island of Capo Passero, a few tens of meters from the mainland, and the island of Correnti, a few kilometers away. It is an agricultural and fishing center bathed by two seas: the Ionian and the rest of the Mediterranean. On the Ionian side, there was once a small port where the fishermen's houses are still present, although now almost falling.

To the east stands the island of Capo Passero, which houses the Spanish fortress surmounted by an imposing bronze statue of the Madonna. In the village, there is the fascinating Tafuri Castle, built-in Liberty style by the Marquis Bruno di Belmonte, which is now a luxury resort. Near the castle, the remains of the tonnara are appreciated, a true monument of industrial archaeology, which illustrates the history of what was the main means of subsistence for the inhabitants.
